Great tune Chris, another of your modern day classics !
I guess you call it a "power ballad" because of the slower tempo ?
You really cut loose with some great guitar solos in this one, and the audio mix/recording is excellent as well.

Really like this song...solid production and great vocal...takes me back to the 60's as well...but that was when I played

Thanks for your kind words.
I was still at school in the 60's, but I was and still am influenced by a lot of music from back then - from both sides of the pond.
I started singing and playing bass in bands in 1971..and I still play a few small gigs with a local band. Most of my songs are more rock orientated - though not metal or anything like that. I'd agree this one has a 60's vibe.
Thanks again for checking it out. :)

Hey Chris what's up man, great to hear your smiling voice. I've been watching and listening to the forum for a while. When I saw your post I knew it was time to pull the trigger on joining. Love your song, great story line and the usual pro vocals

It struck me similar to John, as a 60s folk/rock ballad.
I can imagine QUEEN doing this one in their style.
You have a voice that works.
You might have a lot of fun uploading this to SUNO as is, and seeing what comes out.
Thanks for posting. Enjoyed it.

Thanks very much for checking this out. Yes, it does have a 60's vibe though I tried not to make it too sugary sweet if you know what I mean.
I'm resisting the temptation to go the SUNO route for now. I realise that a lot of songwriters are using it now to create 'productions' - often with very good results, but I enjoy the writing and recording process and I feel that doing it myself - or with other musicians as I sometimes do - keeps it unique..even if it isn't perfect.
Again, thanks for listening. :)

This is really a cool throwback for me Chris
There is a late 60's early 70's English band called Audience that this song took me back to...the musical shifts more than the harder driving you are doing.
They were touring with Led Zeppelin when signed for several good Albums\CDs\hunt them up
They do a great Put a Spell on You cover on their House on the Hill
Thanks so much for listening John. I do remember Audience though I'd have to check them out again. It's the kind of stuff I grew up listening to and I don't hide from it. I'm trying to do what I do but add a bit of current production style if you know what I mean.
Again I appreciate you checking out my song. :)

The Empress (https://on.soundcloud.com/56xkw1y9vonjJFzIOn)
I’m new here so you probably won’t be familiar with my back catalogue. Several of my songs have featured the vixen, gun totin’ and evil temptress ‘Spider Maya’. She’s mostly featured in raucous rock songs, but here she makes an appearance in a power ballad. I got her name (along with several others) a few years back from an online name generator, but I almost feel like I know her!! Rest assured she is pure fiction – that’s what I tell my family anyway!!
The Empress
Words and music written and performed by Chris Price ©2026
Up all alone in the dead of the night, I crack open another beer
Do I see a glimpse of the mornin’ light as I wipe away my tears
See I heard it on the vine that she ended her time in a volley of gunfire
The empress, my lover there can be no other, oh I’m missing Spider Maya
She’d knock on my door, wrestle me to the floor n leave me a physical wreck
Steal all my money and burn down my house, how can I ever forget
Love was so easy, she was ac/dc, n she encourage me to join in
She was always high n she drink me dry, but I loved her for all her sins
Oh….that’s where my story begin
cos I don’t believe everything that I’m told, I can sense it from within
Oh….I can feel it in my bones
She could have survived, and still be alive
The rain pourin’ down, did I hear a sound, there was magic in the air
I look out my window and drenched to her skin, Spider Maya’s standin’ right there
She look at me with a tear in her eye, said hun I just couldn’t run away
Now the time is right, n I’m with ya tonight, n this time I wanna stay
Oh….that’s where my story begin
cos I don’t believe everything that I’m told, I can sense it from within
Oh….I can feel it in my bones
She could have survived, and still be alive
Oh….that’s where my story begin
cos I can’t believe that it’s Spider I hold, a love from deep within
Oh….I can feel it in my bones
Spiders alive, yeah she survived, and I’ll never be alone
