Fair enough, point taken. (smile)

This song isn't anything The Twist.
The 60s aren't coming back because no one today can do the lyrics, melodies, or arrangements. Although She and Him did a great job for several years.
I'm not saying you or anyone else should like this tune. But the hook and theme are there.

What he's running from should be in the 2nd line.
The rest you're overthinking.
Look at Runaway by Del Shannon and California Dreamin' by the Mama's and the Papa's.
Did you listen to Never Wanted Your Love?
Over-thinking is sometimes what songwriters do, because most people don't think at all. Do I like "the twist"? Sure. But it doesn't mean anything to me. There are fun songs, silly songs, satire songs, emotional songs, etc etc.
I'm a country songwriter so I can't write rock songs, or rap songs, and that's ok.
And yup, I loved Mama Cass!!............ Different era. It's not coming back.

Thanks for the honesty. I actually expected that reaction.
I was after a listening experience with this. The hook, the soul, and the arrangement are the main things.
Do a search on She and Him's Never Wanted Your Love on YouTube. On Letterman. I'd have been proud to have been involved with a song that good.
See if you can think of a title like "Staying One Step Ahead of the Past."
It's not that easy.
Good question............ my questions are, what past is the writer trying to keep ahead of? What's the story? I'm assuming it's bad. And if all you do is run from it, how is that helpful? Maybe the bigger question is , perhaps..... you can't out run it no matter how fast you think you're going. Only YOU can stop running than maybe the past will stop chasing you? Sort of like a dog chasing a car, he really doesn't wanna catch it, he just likes the running part. Some people love to relive the past over and over again thinking they're making progress, but they are doing the exact opposite.
Does that make any sense? I could be totally wrong.

Can I be honest here? I don't think this song is finished, at all.
Love where it's going............. but it has to go "somewhere".

Staying One Step Ahead of the Past
I can hear the footsteps of
That bottomless whiskey glass
Lord, help me stay,
on your righteous way
one step ahead of the past
O one step ahead
One step ahead
One step ahead of the past
Lord my valley of regret
Is dark and it’s vast
So I pray and I weep
Lord, help me to keep
One step ahead of the past
O one step ahead
One step ahead
One step ahead of the past
Lord, one step ahead
One step ahead
One step ahead of the past
