Lateral Flow
« on: »
I'm new here so I'm going to post one or two of my earlier songs as well as my current stuff. Don't worry, I'm not going to flood the forum. Not the thing to do imho. This song was written and recorded in my home studio during the Covid pandemic. The testing kits were called Lateral Flow tests over here in the UK...hence the title. The pokey stick was my nickname for the swab that went up your nose as part of that test.

A sensation that you can’t see
Takes off like it’s meant to be
A bolt of lightning out of the blue
And it can happen to me and you
No quick fix and no inoculation
Got no pills to stop you getting sick
No matter what you do or what’s your occupation
Get on the case and do it real quick

It’s time for some lateral flow
All about where the pokey stick go
Right in front of you, it’s there on the line...wait a little time

Got it’s hooks into you and me
Gotta feeling that we’ll never be free
Fixing the numbers n cooking the books
Dropping like flies everywhere you look
Following the science and every soundbite
Talking **** and never get it right
World beating, politics speak
hypocritical bubble and squeak

It’s time for some lateral flow
All about where the pokey stick go
Right in front of you, it’s there on the line...wait a little time

One..you feel real sick
Two.. there’s no quick fix
Three..it’s all on the line
Four...this could be your time
Five...it’s time to pray
That we live to see another day
Pray for our brothers, pray for our sisters
who checked out too soon today

Lateral Flow..where the pokey stick go
Talkin’ bout Lateral Flow...where it come from I don’t know
Lateral Flow..where the pokey stick go
We all need some Lateral Flow...where it come from…

This works really well as a rock track - the performance really elevates the lyric and gives it attitude and momentum. On the page, some phrases initially read a bit clinical or unconventional, but in the context of the vocal delivery and groove they fit much more naturally and feel intentional rather than awkward.

The repetition and chant-like structure works well in this style, and I especially like the “pokey stick” detail and the countdown section, which both land strongly. Overall, the energy and delivery really carry the song.

Hey there Chris... Good song. Sounds to me like a lyric that goes far beyond the physical norms of bacteria's and viruses. This sickness, you speak of, is one born of greed and corruption of all sorts.
Good song.

Thanks Tom. Yes, it's an angry song which goes way deeper than the virus. I won't get into politics here but I'm glad you spotted it.

Yeah, as seen on TV, it's politics, but it's societal, as well. The world is getting crazier.
