Building Bridges To Your Heart
« on: »
Kay-Lynn Carew once told me that when she was a child, she spent an entire summer dreaming that she drove off a bridge in a car. Because of that fear, she didn’t cross her first bridge while driving until she was 22. Even on the LA freeways, she would go out of her way to avoid certain high off-ramps. One day, running late, she finally told herself, “Just do it”… and she did. But to this day, bridges still scare the hell out of her — and if someone else is driving, she just looks down until it’s over.

I took that fear of bridges and used it as a metaphor for something else: the fear of letting someone build bridges to your heart.

Kay-Lynn loved the idea, and together we wrote this song. It leans a little more pop than country, which also shows how naturally she can step outside the country genre as a writer while still bringing the same honesty and emotion to the lyric.

[hyper-modern production with clear vocals, no autotune, Dolby Atmos mix, high-fidelity, high-definition audio and wide stereo]

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse]
I’ve never been good with bridges
Even when they look strong
Something in me always whispers
Don’t stay here too long

[Verse]
Some of us are born with caution
Written deep inside our bones
We test the weight of every step
Before we cross what’s not yet known

[Pre-chorus]
Every step I’ve never taken
Still feels heavier than planned
I’m tired of just standing here
Trying to understand

[Chorus]
So if I pause before I reach you
If I’m careful where I start
It’s not the fall I’m scared of, baby
It’s building bridges to your heart
I don’t doubt the ground you stand on
Or the truth in who you are
I’ve just seen how easy trust can fall
It’s building bridges to your heart

[Break]

[Verse]
I’ve walked away from solid ground
Just to keep my balance safe
Called it freedom, called it wisdom
When it was fear I couldn’t face

[Pre-chorus]
Every step I’ve never taken
Still feels heavier than planned
I’m tired of just standing here
Trying to understand

[Chorus]
So if I pause before I reach you
If I’m careful where I start
It’s not the fall I’m scared of, baby
It’s building bridges to your heart
I don’t doubt the ground you stand on
Or the truth in who you are
I’ve just seen how easy trust can fall
It’s building bridges to your heart

[Bridge]
Maybe courage isn’t fearless
Maybe it’s one step at a time
Eyes wide open, hands still shaking
But I’m crossing anyway tonight

[Interlude]

[Final chorus]
So if I pause before I reach you
If I’m careful where I start
It’s not the fall I’m scared of, baby
It’s building bridges to your heart
If it breaks, I’ll feel it breaking
If it holds, it’s a good start
I’m still afraid of what could happen
Building bridges to your heart

[Outro]

I shouldn't comment on this song, but I gotta say that chorus was all you Robert. And it's just really really good writing.!
When you row someone else across the river, you get there yourself

Yeah, I played that chorus on the piano and uploaded it into Suno. Honestly, this is probably one of the best co-writes I’ve ever been part of.
