Rubber Band Love
« on: »
A fellow songwriter, Bill Draper, once posted: "Flexible like a rubber band... Watch out for the backlash though." I found that idea so inspiring that I had to write a song about it. Here’s "Rubber Band Love”. I wanted it to sound a bit like the 70s pop rock band Pilot. Feedback is always appreciated.

[Intro]
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love

[Verse]
Our love’s like a rubber band, take it or leave it
We say goodbye, slam the door, but we don’t mean it
I walk out sayin’ “this time I’m done”
Two blocks later I’m already on the run
Back to you like I never even planned
Ain’t it funny what it does, a rubber band

[Pre-chorus]
We stretch it out, we let it go
How far can we take it? Nobody knows

[Chorus]
Rubber band love, snap me back to you
Every time I leave, that’s what I do
Pull me away, I come right back again
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love
Rubber band love, strong and a little crazy
Might go too far, but it won’t break, baby
I keep comin’ back, just can’t get enough
Oh, can’t get enough, rubber band love
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love

[Break]

[Verse]
We bend and we twist, but we don’t fall apart
Got a whole lotta stretch in a stubborn heart
We push it wide, we test that line
You say yours and I say mine
But something ‘bout you I just can’t outrun
You let me go… and here I come

[Pre-chorus]
We laugh it off, we make a scene
We’re somewhere in the in-between

[Bridge]
If you let me fly too far, I just might
Come back with a little backlash tonight
We keep stretchin’ it thin, playin’ pretend
One little snap and that’s the end

[Final chorus]
Rubber band love, snap me back to you
Every time I leave, that’s what I do
Pull me away, I come right back again
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love
Rubber band love, strong and a little wild
Stretch me out, cause I’m your style
I keep comin’ back, just can’t get enough
Oh, can’t get enough, rubber band love

[Outro]
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love
Oh-oh-oh, rubber band love

Hey Tex, I had long forgotten about it too, it's amazing how your brain has a hard drive that stores things you don't even know that are there! hahha

"Rubber Band Man" ... I just listened to it. I've never heard that song before. The Spinners, they sound much different than Pilot. I grew up in Europe. Pilot was a Scottish band. They had huge hits.

Love the vibe of this song...kinda has a Bruno Mars flavor IMO funny enough...love the intro and the rubber band love there....I think it hurts the song to mention rubber band love so much though...I'd suggest starting it more subtle after that intro "our love's so elastic...or like a trampoline..." or something else that is rubber or elastic, or that you can take and leave, because you honestly don't really take or leave a rubber band so that line feels odd to begin with...I also think the already on the run line can be tweaked as I get it misdirects and goes with the next line but don't feel it's very smooth...and it feels disjointed...as you said you were done but already on the run sounds like you're still going...again I understand what you did but I think you can do better honestly...I'd also suggest rethink saying Rubber Band Love so much in the chorus as well except to end it and then sing that intro hook the way you do....I think that would make the hook stronger and not fatigue the listener from the phrase...love all the clever imagery about stretching...even the snap is cool in the bridge but maybe say something like you don't want it to snap or trying not to let it...as is it's like a warning with no payoff...just my opinion...great sound and snappy writing!! Good luck!!

Thanks, I really appreciate the thoughtful feedback and glad you liked the vibe!
On the repetition of ‘rubber band love,’ that was actually very intentional. I was going for a catchy, 70s-style pop feel where the hook really sticks. A lot of big pop songs lean heavily on repeating the title to make it memorable (Stayin’ Alive, Dancing Queen, Let It Be, Uptown Funk, Happy, etc.), so I wasn’t too worried about overusing it.
I get what you’re saying about possibly dialing it back, but for this one I think the repetition helps the sing-along factor rather than hurting it.
On the verse notes, I see your point about the flow, although I was aiming for that quick turnaround feeling of ‘I’m done…actually, I’m already coming back,’ which ties into the whole rubber band idea.

I’ll rethink the “take it or leave it line”. Good catch there. I was thinking more about attitude and relationship tension than the object. I might change it to “pull it or leave it” or  “stretch it or leave it”.

Really appreciate you taking the time to dig into it and share your thoughts!

I know this sounds silly, but putting the word Rubber and Love in the same title gave me a visual that was not about the song...

My mind is weird I guess.

Haha, fair enough - can’t control where people’s minds go! 😄 I promise the song’s a bit more innocent than that. You put a big smile on my face.

I wrote these lyrics with a ’70s-style pop song in mind. I tried to get Suno to generate a sound similar to the Scottish pop band Pilot, whose biggest hits were “Magic” and "January". They worked with Alan Parsons, and some of the members later formed the Bay City Rollers, while another went on to work with 10cc.
Some of the country guys hanging out here are probably thinking, “Who is he talking about?”. Anyway, Suno definitely captured the sound I was aiming for, while giving the track a slightly more modern feel.
