Whatever It May Be
« on: »
"Whatever 'It' May Be" is a playful, tongue-in-cheek country-pop song about the power of imagination. It never reveals what "it" actually is, inviting listeners to bring their own interpretation. Every lyric works on two levels - completely innocent on the surface, yet suggestive enough to make people smile. The song isn't really about any one thing; it's about how people hear what they want to hear.

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse]
I found a little something
That always lifts my mood
Some folks think they know it
But they ain't got a clue
You can take it anywhere
Never leaves a mark
It never fails to make me smile
When the day gets dark

[Pre-chorus]
Everybody's looking
Trying to read my mind
Still they never seem to see
What's hiding in plain sight

[Chorus]
Squeeze it, tease it
Hold it if you need it
Love it, leave it
It will grow if you feed it
Wrap your hands around it
Feel it come alive
Find a little rhythm
Let it take you for a ride
Call it what you want to
I won’t disagree
'Cause what it really means...
Depends on what you see
Squeeze it, tease it...
Whatever "it" may be

[Break]

[Verse]
Some say keep it hidden
Some say show it off
Some folks overthink it
I just laugh it off
If it makes you feel alive
Why apologize?
A little bit of mystery
Looks good in every light

[Pre-chorus]
Everybody's guessing
Whispering their views
Funny how they tell on themselves
Long before they tell on you

[Chorus]
Squeeze it, tease it
Hold it if you need it
Love it, leave it
It will grow if you feed it
Wrap your hands around it
Feel it come alive
Find a little rhythm
Let it take you for a ride
Call it what you want to
I won’t disagree
'Cause what it really means
Depends on what you see
Squeeze it, tease it
Whatever "it" may be

[Bridge]
Maybe you’ve already guessed
Maybe you got it wrong
Maybe you’ve been smiling since
The first line of this song
I could tell you what it is
But where would be the fun?
Some things are much better
When left to everyone

[Interlude]

[Final chorus]
Squeeze it, tease it
Hold it if you need it
Love it, leave it
It will grow if you feed it
Wrap your hands around it
Feel it come alive
Find a little rhythm
Let it take you for a ride
Call it what you want to
I won’t disagree
'Cause what it really means
Depends on what you see
Squeeze it, tease it
Whatever "it" may be

[Outro]
Squeeze it, tease it
Whatever "it" may be
Squeeze it, tease it
It’s whatever you believe

I've noticed that, so far, nobody has commented on this song. The reactions I've received elsewhere have been pretty similar. Most people assume I wrote something "dirty" or overtly sexual, and I suspect that's made some listeners a little hesitant to comment.

That made me realize I should probably explain the idea behind the lyric.

The song never defines what "it" is. That's intentional. The chorus is built around a double entendre, so listeners are free to interpret it however they like. If someone hears a sexual meaning, that's certainly one possible interpretation - but it isn't the only one, and it isn't the one I had in mind when I wrote it.

For example, "it" could simply be love.

• Squeeze it, tease it – Love should have both affection and playfulness.

• Hold it if you need it – Hold on to love when life gets difficult.

• Love it, leave it – Love is a choice. Sometimes you embrace it, and sometimes the healthiest choice is to let it go.

• It will grow if you feed it – Love grows when you nurture it with trust, kindness, time, laughter, and attention.

• Wrap your hands around it – Embrace it. Protect it. Treasure it.

• Feel it come alive – Relationships flourish when both people invest in them.

• Find a little rhythm – Every couple develops their own rhythm and way of moving through life together.

• Let it take you for a ride – Let love carry you through life's adventures.

• Call it what you want to / I won't disagree – Everyone has their own definition of love.

• 'Cause what it really means / Depends on what you see – The meaning belongs to the listener.

For me, that's really the point of the song. It isn't about one specific thing. It's about the fact that we all bring our own experiences - and imaginations - to a lyric. So yes... if someone hears a sexual song, that's a perfectly valid interpretation. If someone hears a love song, a song about songwriting, or something completely different, that's equally valid.

Whatever "it" may be. 😊

Hi:

The chorus initially seems a little long for me?  I might have cut it in half initially - feels natural to have finished on line 8...and then maybe do the very last chorus extended?  Or even the second?

I like the ambiguity of "it".  I may have resolved in the bridge that everybody's got an "it" - they just gotta find it?  That way it may clear the hurdle of the sexual overtones? (While I understand people might think this...is it them projecting?)

Thanks for sharing!
