Your Last Goodbye

I saw your name light up my phone
Couldn't remember the last time you called
Figured I'd call you back someday
Like I've said before, just not today

Got caught up in a different life
Someone else's arms and different nights
Never thought time could slip away so fast
Didn't know that call would be your last

Now your voice lives on forever in my phone
A ghost in my pocket, never leaving me alone

I missed your last goodbye
Let it ring while you were slipping away
Now I play it on repeat and cry
Hearing you fade, hearing you sigh
You said, "I don't have long left now"
God, I wish I'd have listened then, somehow
But silence was my only reply
To your last goodbye

Heard the news from a friend the next day
Said you didn't make it through the pain
Said you asked about me near the end
Called my name like we were back then

I sat there starin' at that screen
At that little red dot I hadn't seen
Hands were shackin' when I pressed replay
I heard every word I didn't say

Every word you said cut me deep
With a life time of regret I'll keep

I missed your last goodbye
Let it ring while you were slipping away
Now I play it on repeat and cry
Hearing you breaking as you try
You said, "Call me back if you get this soon..."
Wish I'd have listened that afternoon
I wasn't there by your side
For your last goodbye

Now I talk to a voice that can't respond
To a love that's already gone
The cruelest part I can't deny
You still sound alive

I missed your last goodbye
Let it ring, let you fade away
Now your voice is where I hide
From the guilt lying deep inside
You said, "I love you" soft and slow
Words I never got to know
Till it was too late to try
After your last goodbye

Every night I press replay
Just to hear you slip away

Great song, personally, I'd leave the outro as is, but that's just me, either one works. so, whatever you feel is right :)

Oh, now isn't that so beautiful. What a lovely song, all the way from start to finish it just draws you in.
I think a lot of people would put this song on repeat, it's another wonderful piece. Definitely not playing this for my wife, she hasn't got over your first one.
Thanks for posting Tex absolute pleasure to listen.

So well written. I got the same feels when I heard Collin Raye's "Love, Me". Great job.
